Why do the ingredients matter?

Ingredients in the food you eat matter.  Hippocrates (c. 460 bce – 375 bce) knew this.  Two of his most famous sayings identify the importance of food choices and gut health.  The ingredients in the food you consume influence the gut microbiome and overall health.  Eating a diet that is composed of whole grains, vegetables, fruits, nuts, and seeds, and quality protein (wild-caught, pasture-raised, grass-fed, etc.) help to balance the gut and improve overall health.

Healthy ingredients don't have to mean that you're spending hours in the kitchen!

Healthy meals start with whole, minimally processed ingredients.  Shopping the perimeter of the grocery store is one of the best strategies to find the healthiest food choices.  Variety is also important.  Most people eat the same 5 to 10 different fruits and vegetables.  Challenge yourself to try one new vegetable and one new fruit each week.  Since our palates change throughout our lives, you never know when you’re going to find a new favorite unless you try!
